Hall of Fame
In 2013, Mankato West High School started a Hall of Fame for the purpose of providing our current students, staff, and community with the vision of the outstanding legacies of Mankato High School and Mankato West High School. It is hoped that these people will provide role models for our current students and offer us a chance to celebrate the successes of those from our school.
We are very excited about the opportunity to honor from some of the many talented and successful people who have been a part of the Mankato West High School community and also to display them as examples to our students past, present and future. |

Charlton(Chuck) Dietz
Chuck Dietz's contributions to the legal community are widely recognized and respected. He served as the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer at 3M for 17 years, during which time he helped to bring innovative products like the Post-It Note to market. He also inspired a culture of creativity and accountability within the company's legal department. But Dietz's commitment to equal justice is perhaps even more impressive. After joining 3M's Office of General Counsel in 1958, he rose through the ranks to become chief legal officer in 1976. He is credited with guiding the legal department's transition from being a separate, independent law firm to one that is fully integrated into the company. Dietz also served as an adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline Law School for over 15 years and was a member of the school's board of trustees for more than 20 years, including three as board chair. In addition, Dietz was a board member for various community-based organizations, including United Way, the Wilder Foundation, and the St. Paul Area YMCA. He was also a co-founder of the Campaign for Legal Aid, which has raised millions of dollars in private funding for legal aid programs in Minnesota. Dietz's legacy is one of inspiring leadership, integrity, and commitment to equal justice, and he continues to make a difference in his community to this day.
Acceptance Remarks: “I am grateful for the support and guidance of my high school teachers, Pinney and Alexander. Their dedication to their students was truly remarkable, and they helped make it possible for me to pursue a liberal arts education. Additionally, I have fond memories of other faculty members at Mankato High, including Louis Todnem, Irene Melhouse, Donna Sonnickson, and Karl Adophson. I am also appreciative of lawyer McLean, whose encouragement set me on this path. When the Scarlet team comes on the field, we will all stand up and cheer.”
Gratefully,
Chuck Dietz
Nominator Remarks: “Dietz, whose modesty is as legendary as his straight talk, is a man of few words when asked about his career. But he has strong feelings about equal justice.”

For more than 20 years Steve, currently on disability while battling cancer, covered Major League Baseball for USA Today and Baseball Weekly, and then covered professional golf for USA Today and Golf Weekly, his dream job. Steve pursued his dreams and achieved them. I am in awe of his many successes.”

Acceptance Remarks: ” I am so honored to enter the Mankato West Hall of Fame. I'm always humbled by the kindness, and grit that drive the Mankato West community. There are too many Scarlets to thank. A few: wry and witty Speech coaches Kris Lindvall and Robert Ihrig, and zany-yet-rigorous theater director Paul Christianson, each helped me channel my loudmouth tendencies toward productive ends. Dr. Tania Lyon, my incisive English teacher and student newspaper supervisor, challenged me to ask hard questions and to never settle for half answers and has continued to offer sage guidance since graduation. My parents Scott and Carmen supported me in all endeavors, even the weird ones; and my younger brothers Brodie and Lucas always stood ready to cut me down to size. I'm forever in debt to all of them, and so many more. “
Nominator Remark: “Caleb has won numerous journalism awards that place him among the best of national reporters, and he is early in his career. Caleb's stories have landed him at the center of the controversies of our time. Caleb writes high-quality, well-researched stories for people to consider, to agree with, to disagree with, and to prompt them to learn more. Through his work, Caleb leads people and shapes society in impressive ways. Caleb proudly credits Mankato West and the broader Mankato Community as providing a firm foundation for his success.”

Surviving high school is no small thing; I'm glad that I had teachers like Jack Halvorson, who taught me Spanish and chaperoned an unforgettable trip to Spain with my dear friend Danielle Stedman; Roger Wilker, who coached my husband and I and our friend Ben Green in Academic Decathlon, and taught me how to think and study and push myself; the late Martin Wiltgen, who always reminds me of beauty; and Jane Schostag, who taught me not only how to structure writing in order to communicate and persuade, but also how to recognize propaganda and see how it can manipulate people. I also loved the MWHS library and hope that it is still open, operational, and staffed by a credentialed librarian who can help young people find the information they need and help them enjoy stories in the way I do.

Acceptance Remarks: I am incredibly honored to be accepted into the Mankato West Hall of Fame. During high school I was challenged and shown where to push boundaries, taught kindness and grace, and introduced to the idea of justice: all things that I have carried forward into my work. I am grateful to the West community, and my parents Julie and Rich, for modeling how to be in the world. With gratitude, Blair
Nominator Remarks: ‘’Blair is married and has two amazing boys. She has always hoped to save the world, and her chosen career path and personal projects have made those dreams come true. She is informed, curious, and dynamic in her work. Her advocacy of others makes this world a better place for us all.”
Eric Stenzel
Eric was a proud member of the 1999 Mankato West state championship football team, where he was a proven leader both on and off the field. While at West, he was a team captain his junior and senior year, and played varsity football for four years. Eric set a state record for tackles and assisted tackles, and was named to the All State Football Team in both 1998 and 1999. These accomplishments led him to be featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd” in 1999. Among his other athletic and academic accolades, Eric was also named to the Mankato All City Team in 1997, 1998 and 1999, as well as the Big Nine All Conference team those years. Upon graduation, Eric played football for the University of Minnesota where he was a two time letter winner in academics and athletics.
Acceptance Remarks: Entering the Mankato West HOF is a great honor. I take this honor along with my football teammates and coaches, as together we won the 1999 State Football title, sparking a still dominant Football program.
Nominator Remarks: “The West Football program today is a powerhouse. Rewind to 1996, when Eric Stenzel was a freshman playing on the varsity team, they went winless. I was his classmate then, wife now. Our senior year, he led the team to a State Championship, our school's first football championship. It was truly amazing to witness the transformation the team went through over the years. They won the title as a team, but Eric's role on that team cannot be denied. He was the leader. He was the one who got everyone in the weight room in the summers, back when that was not an organized thing. He led the defense as a linebacker. His moto, find the ball-tackle the ball, and he did it well. He led the state in tackles, set defensive state records and still holds many West Football records (I tried to find the records, but could not, but I am sure he is there!). He paved the way and set an example for the next generation of West Football players. He was heavily recruited by colleges all over the country and ended up staying close to home at the University of Minnesota. After playing the first year as a true freshman (something that is very rare), he tore his ACL, had to battle back and went through some coaching changes. He never actually got to play the position that he loved and was born to do (linebacker). But he never quit and he graduated in 4 years and earned multiple All Big Ten academic awards. Today he is still that hard working man with a work ethic that doesn't stop. He owns a drywall business in town here, and we are raising our 3 kids, future Scarlets. He enjoys running, has completed the Mankato Half Marathon every year and also competes in duathlons. Still has that same level of competitiveness! I believe he would be a very deserving inductee into the Mankato West Hall of Fame.”
Jessica Stenzel
Jessica (Mittelstadt) Stenzel
Jessica was an outstanding student athlete while at Mankato West. Her accomplishments are numerous, and many of her records still stand. She was a five time state track and field champion, participating in the State Track and Field Meet an incredible nine times. Some of Jessica’s accomplishments include: 200 meter dash state record in 1999, and she was a member of the 4x200 meter relay team in 1998, 1999 and 2000, both as an indoor and outdoor athlete. In 1998, Jessica and her teammates on the 4x200 meter relay team set an all-time state class AA record with a time of 1:41.86. She still holds 8 school records here at Mankato West! Upon graduation, Jessica attended the University of Minnesota where she ran track and field and was a two time letter winner.
Acceptance Remarks: I am proud to represent Track and Field in the Mankato West HOF. My time running for West was filled with lessons that I have taken with me in life. It is an honor to be recognized.
Nominator Remarks: “Jessica not only still holds 8 school records that have lasted over 20 years, her times in the 200 and 400 meters are still among the top times ever recorded in Minnesota state high school track and field history.”
-Keith Stenzel
Roger Wilker
A beloved teacher at Mankato West High School, Roger Wilker touched the lives of many students. While at West, he taught British and American Literature, along with many other courses, all with rigor and enthusiasm. For several years, Roger advised the Yell club that was responsible for all pep fests, Homecoming activities, and any other reason to celebrate our students. Because of the admiration students had for him, finding participants for this was never a difficult task. Roger was also the leader of the Academic Decathlon team that experienced phenomenal success over the years. This team took home multiple championships in the state of Minnesota, and competed nationally with teams as far away as Los Angeles, CA. Roger and his dedicated students would meet after school and on weekends to find their success. “No one has come close to his dedication, zeal and professionalism.”
Proudly accepted by his daughter Jodi.

Todd Birr
Mankato West High School Class of 1986
Todd began his curling career while in High School at Mankato West. He went on to earn a Bronze Medal at the Men's World Curling Championships in 2007. Todd is currently the ice manager at Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine. He is extremely proud to be co-founder of the Lupus Research Foundation (LRF). The LRF is a charitable organization whose mission is to help find a cure for lupus by raising awareness and funds for lupus research. Todd's wife, Regan, has lupus. Todd also helped create the LRF's flagship event, "Lupus Spiel USA". The Lupus Spiel started in 2014 and has grown to become the largest Professional-Amateur tournament for curling in the world. The Lupus Spiel brings together curlers from all over the globe, including Olympic medalists and World medalists. It is a family event that showcases the good will of curling. It is for curlers of every age and skill level, held in Minnesota every year. The purpose of the tournament is to raise awareness and funds for research, and showcase education. Every year the primarily-funded researcher of the Lupus Research Foundation makes a keynote speech to educate the participants about lupus and recent advances in research. This tournament has a large reach in terms of attendance and social media outreach (thousands of people). The Lupus Spiel generates excellent press coverage to raise awareness. The LRF has raised over $750,000 to date.
Todd enjoys speaking at the Lupus Spiel and leading programs the LRF conducts across the country to raise funds and awareness. This past year, the LRF's primarily-funded researcher, Dr. Timothy Niewold, director of the Colton Center for Autoimmunity at New York University Langone Medical Center, discovered a grouping of genes that can be highly predictive of lupus. This is extremely promising because it translates into preventative opportunities for the patient, and will influence future drug studies. It gives people a chance to preemptively treat their disease. Therefore it will save lives. This is the biggest accomplishment of the foundation so far. Nothing like this existed when Regan was first diagnosed. NYU has filed a patent, and the publication will be out this fall. The LRF's involvement in this project is that they provided support for the staff who helped make this discovery. The LRF is even more proud of and grateful for all the LRF supporters who make the research possible. It is something Todd endeavors to carry on until a cure is found.
Acceptance Remarks: I am truly humbled to be receiving this unexpected honor. When I first received word of the nomination, I must confess I initially thought I was the subject of a practical joke. I went through in my head a list of those I thought clever and devious enough to pull off this prank and I had even already started plotting my revenge when my wife, Regan, discovered I was indeed being considered for this honor. I would like to thank Tracey Laird Heavyrunner for the nomination. I can't express what it means to me. I would also like to thank the selection committee at Mankato West Highschool for honoring me in this way. I wouldn't be where I am today without the support and love of my parents. Thank you Mom for all you've done and Dad, I know you're looking down with the pride you've always shown for me and all your children. My family has played a big role throughout my life and this honor is theirs also. That brings us to Regan. My love. And the most important person in my life. This honor is as much hers as it is mine. Thank you, Regan. I love you.
Win Brockmeyer
Mankato High School Class of 1927
Win held many records in both football and track and went on to attend the University of Minnesota, graduating with an S.S. in Education in just three years. He played halfback for the Gophers in a backfield that included Bronco Nagurski. His best college day came in 1928 when he gained 166 yards rushing and scored all the points in the Gophers' upset of Purdue. He ran 46 yards for one touchdown, passed for two more and Minnesota beat Purdue 18-0. Brockmeyer played semi-pro ball with Minnesota All-Stars, but his greatest ability was in coaching, and he quickly gave up his player role to concentrate on coaching. He coached in Fergus Falls, Faribault, and Wausau, WI. In his 40 years of coaching high school football, his teams had a combined record of 265-43-
14. His record at Wausau High was 230-33-9. Over those 34 seasons, his team either won outright or shared in 26 conference championships. "For years he coached basketball, among other sports, and his basketball teams compiled a record of 128 wins against 88 losses, and won the state championship in his first year with the team and runner up the second year. In 1996 the Win Brockmey-er Memorial Scholarship Fund was formed within the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin by members of the Win Brockmeyer Memorial Committee with donations received from over 125 donors in Brockmeyer's memory. Brockmeyer was a legendary high school football coach who excelled in leadership and the development of human potential. His winning football record from 1937 - 1971 covered 34 years at Wausau High School, which served students in the area currently served by D.C. Everest, Wausau East and West, and Newman Catholic High Schools. The area-wide scholarship recognition program concept provides area-wide participation and recognition and unites the region in recognition of its outstanding football players. It also provides an opportunity to tell the Brockmeyer story and focus on his football legacy, uniting the communities in the region through the cooperative selection process. In the Win Brockmeyer Scholarship Fund's history, 79 young men have received scholarship awards totaling nearly $68,000.
"As a member of the Blue Earth County Historical Society, a MWHS grad in 1978 and a fellow track athlete, I am always on the lookout for old track and field results. I recently came across all the Minnesota State High School Track & Field championship results from 1923 through 2021 and thought it would be enjoyable to see how Mankato High did way back in the day. Little did I realize the athletic talent at Mankato High back in the 1920s! The 1926 Mankato High team won the school's first ever state track championship beating Eveleth 36 1/2 to 32 7/10. What really caught my attention was the 1927 track meet results. Mankato High finished second that year to Eveleth (42 to 32 ¼), but the outstanding athlete at that year's meet was Win Brockmeyer. He defended his first place finish from 1926 in the pole vault, and then proceeded to place first in three other events: the 120 yd HH, the 220 yd LH and the broad jump. This made me think - what did Win do after graduating from Mankato High in 1927? A quick google search brought me some answers. Win went on to the University of Minnesota and played football there. After graduating from the U, he went on to coach high school football and wow, did he ever do that well. In 40 years of coaching high school football, he compiled a record of 265-43-14. While coaching for 34 years at Wausau High in Wausau, Wisconsin, his football teams went 230-33-9. During the mid 1940's, Wausau High had a 46 game unbeaten streak - a record that stood until 1987. Win's legacy lives on through the Win Brockmeyer Memorial Scholarship Fund, which gives annual scholarships to graduating senior student athletes from the greater Wausau, Wisconsin area."
Kevin Allen - Nominator
Acceptance Remarks: Win Brockmeyer lead by example, excelling in athletics, leadership and the development of human potential. Win was a guiding force for many young men and women not only on the field of play, but off the field as well. The Mankato West High School Hall of Fame Award honors the memory of a man who used the athletic traits of aggressiveness, courage, sportsmanship and physical development to help shape the lives and character of his many students.
Harold Fitterer
Mankato High Teacher 1951-1965
As a teacher, Mr. Fitterer taught 11th grade English & American Literature; was the Junior & Senior class play director; debate coach; Yell Club; Junior & Senior Hi-Y; assistant coach for wrestling and baseball; and side-line announcer at football games. He was a teacher, instructor, inspirer, mentor, and friend to hundreds of youth. Mr. Fitterer was asked to write a piece for the Mankato Free Press which was published on Dec. 20, 1958. His message speaks to his philosophy of being a teacher, the responsibilities he saw as a teacher, and the ideals he held for himself as a teacher. You are Always Being Judged... Teaching is the Most Challenging, Rewarding Profession So you want to become a teacher? Then you want to enter the most challenging and rewarding profession in the world. Then you want to accept the philosophy that the superfluous material returns of work are so easily shattered by the infinite rewards of human relationships. Go then to the college of your choice and gain your undergraduate degree which will prepare you for teaching. When you are there practice the habits of study which for the rest of your life you will want from your own students. And when you earn your degree and accept your first position, you may begin to be a teacher. Mr. Fitterer left Mankato High School in 1965 to become an English professor, and later Dean, at Minnesota State-Mankato. His legacy at MSU is remembered even today, with the University's Distinguished Service Award being named the Harold J. Fitterer Service Award. Even after leaving the high school, however, he was committed to the Mankato Schools, as he served on the Mankato School Board as a member and chair.
"Not being certain of the criteria for being selected, it appears that one criterion is having graduated from the school. If that be the case, using mental reservation, I submit Harold Fitterer was well over qualified for the honor. Harry Fitterer was a great part of the many hundreds of Mankato High graduates who were raught by, directed by, coached by, and befriended by him. He had a mission to elicit the full potential of each of his charges whether through American Literature discussions and essays; drama students from his eighteen class plays; coaching his award winning debaters in critical research, effective speaking, and arguing respectfully. During his fourteen year tenure, each student who had the privilege of being influenced by him had a part of Harry Fitterer walking across the auditorium stage to receive her or his diploma. Most certainly Harold Fitterer was a graduate, many times over, from Mankato West Senior High School. I further submit that Harry Fitterer's influence has spanned three and possibly four generations - ours, our children's, grandchildren's, and possibly great grandchildren's who love literature in many forms, theater, politics, and law."
Roger Sinclair - Nominator
Acceptance Remarks: It is an honor to accept this on behalf of my father, Harold Fitterer. His career at Mankato High School was a treasure to him, and left an indelible mark on thousands of students; their families; my mom, Marjorie Fitterer; and my sisters Jean, Lisa, and me. Today, fifty years after he was at the high school, I am still told stories by his former students of the impact he had on them in class, debate, drama, sports, and life. We are so thrilled and appreciative that his legacy has been recognized by the Mankato West High School Hall of Fame.

Acceptance Remarks: My induction into the 2021 Mankato West High School Hall of Fame is quite an honor. I work in a field with quiet professionals who get little public recognition, so this is outside the norm for me and I am humbled by the nomination. I took the road less traveled in my career, but with the consistent support of my family and friends, that road was the right one for me. I am very grateful to have them in my life. I would also like to thank Jack Halvorson, who nominated me for this award. He encouraged me to believe in myself and ultimately inspired my love of travel and adventure. Congratulations to all the selectees.

John Barnett
Mankato West High School Principal 1976-2004
John joined Mankato Area Public Schools in March, 1976, as Assistant Principal at Mankato West. He was promoted to Principal in 1981 where he remained until his retirement in 2004. While John was Principal, Mankato West was selected as a Blue Ribbon National School of Excellence by the U.S. Dept. of Education in 1993. The honor, conferred in Washington D.C., was given to public and private schools that exhibited overall excellence, outstanding community support, rigorous curriculum, and outstanding teaching and support services. John was involved in other innovative programs throughout his career including the Bush Principals' Leadership Program, sponsored jointly by the Bush Foundation and the University of Minnesota. The program awarded selectees with 30 days of seminars featuring leading national experts in K-12 education in a cohort setting. With the support of the program, John and his staff co-created and initiated a model for shared decision-making that soon resulted in direct staff involvement in financial, personnel, and operational decisions. The model had a far-reaching impact on collegiality and building climate throughout the remainder of his career.
"John Barnett's leadership at Mankato West spanned 28 years from 1976-2004. During these years, he garnered awards both for his leadership and for the excellence of Mankato West. To this day, for example, the school prides itself on having been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a national distinction. To his core, he believed - every day of his tenure - that there is simply no finer school than Mankato West, and this award affirmed his belief. All school principals experience the powerful "Highs" and heart-wrenching "Lows" that this position demands. Many of those joys and sorrows remain untold. However, a lasting Scarlet memory for generations of students/staff was his gift of establishing a strong relationship with students. Each morning, he would plant himself in the first-floor hallway (middle staircase) where he welcomed students, shouted out congratulations, or gently pulled a student aside for some "guidance." No person cheered harder at graduation for all of "his" students than John Barnett. Generations of students and staff, to include all previous Scarlet Hall of Fame inductees, owe their success, in part, to Mr. Barnett. Since 1976 to this very day, John Barnett's blood has run Scarlet!"
Pat Schmidt - Nominator
Acceptance Remarks: I am honored to be selected a member of the Mankato West Hall of Fame and gratefully share this honor with the dedicated teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, secretaries, custodians, cooks, and other staff, whose devotion to West's students reminded time and time again of how fortunate I was to spend my administrative career among them and in the Mankato Area Public Schools. I am grateful, too, to the approximately 7000 talented, caring, energetic students who attended West as members of the Classes of 1976 - 2004, and who maintained the Scarlet traditions of academic and extra-curricular excellence while also answering the call to take care of one another. Thank you to your parents/guardians, for entrusting you to us and for their personal and financial support of this very special school district. Thank you one and all for including me in the Mankato West Hall of Fame.

Bruce had many traditional infantry command and staff positions in the United States, Germany, and Korea. He was Deputy Chief of Staff for Political-Military Affairs, U.S. Command and U.S. Army, Berlin, Germany; he moved on to be Assistant, later Army Attaché, U.S. Embassies, Helsinki, Finland and Tallinn, Estonia; Mr. Boevers was a Defense and Army Attaché, U.S. Embassy, Vienna, Austria, Policy Advisor, Afghan Ministry of Defense in Kabul, Afghanistan. Bruce went on to be a Faculty Associate at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and then as a Senior Military Analyst at Northrop Grumman Technical Services, Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance and Collective Training Directorate, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Bruce also was an Adjunct Faculty Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver. He has received numerous awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Knight's Cross of the Finnish Lion, Austrian Service Cross (Silver). We thank Bruce for his dedication to his military service. Bruce currently is active at the Habitat for Humanity and Larimer County Search & Rescue.
"At the 50th reunion for the Mankato High Class of 1969, Bruce and retired Navy Commander Steve Workman led a tribute to the veterans in the class. Bruce noted that the tribute was not to himself and Steve, who had long and rewarding careers, but to all the others who answered their country's call, many as draftees. Many of those ended up fighting an unpopular war in Vietnam, only to return and suffer abuse from those they had sought to serve. For all of them, especially those still suffering today, they offered their sincere thanks and support. "I have truly been blessed with opportunities and experiences far beyond what I deserved. I am forever grateful for the great start I got at Mankato High. Thanks to all who made that experience all that it was."
Janet Goff - Nominator
Acceptance Remarks: I am truly humbled and honored, but mostly surprised to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, lack of fame notwithstanding. This is especially the case since my contact with the Mankato school system lasted a mere 4 ½ years. Those years, however, were absolutely transforming. Having arrived from a small school system in rural Iowa, I was suddenly exposed to great curricula and an athletic system that enabled me to develop the skills and knowledge that would lead to my appointment to West Point, and to eventually becoming a U.S. Army Ranger (much to the astonishment of all who knew me). My great teachers, coaches, staff and classmates all played huge roles in my development. For its part, the Army provided me with a world class education through the graduate level and the many opportunities that make my resume sound so unconventional. None of this would have been possible, however, without the love, understanding and support of my awesome wife, the girl across the aisle in German class. Together we have traveled the world (living 11 years in German-speaking countries), raised a family and still maintained our sanity. She is the greatest asset I ever received from MHS. My message to students is that you don't need to be at the top of your class, a multi-sport letterman, or a cool man/person about town. You also need not fear the great unknowns that life might throw your way. Keep putting one foot in front of the other, and if you think you can do something, give it your best shot; you'll probably be successful!
Mike Brennan
Mankato West High School Class of 1975
After high school, Mike graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a Project Manager at Ryan Companies in their Minneapolis office in the late-80's, where he helped establish a new branch office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mike and Cathy have grown Brennan Construction to $28m of revenue in 2019, and Brennan Properties currently owns/manages approximately 100k sf of commercial office space in Mankato. In addition, Brennan Companies completed the $15 million commercial mixed-use building in downtown Mankato called "Bridge Plaza" this year. Despite Mike's incredible professional resume, he would be most proud of serving the community he's called home for most of his life. Mike's list of current and past affiliations include South Central College Foundation (past President / Board Member), Kiwanis (past Board Member), Blue Earth County Historical Society (past Board Member), Envision 2020 (Stakeholder), MSU-Mankato Construction Management program (past Board Member), Greater Mankato Growth member, YMCA (past Board Member), Associated Builders and Contractors (past Board Member), and Mankato Youth Place (formerly Boys and Girls Club, founding Board Member and Executive Board Member).
"During the 33 years I've known Mike, he's been my boss, my client, and my business partner...however by far the most important person he's been to me is my dad. He's shown me that professional accomplishments are meaningless without community involvement, philanthropy, and family."

Barb coached volleyball and other sports; and she created programs (outdoor rec, activities) as a Physical Education teacher.
"I met Barb in 1979 when I was hired as a member of her volleyball coaching staff with Dee Ballard and Sue Miller... Barb 'pioneered' many athletic opportunities for students as a coach/advisor during her tenure at West; and, represented our Region at the state level (Mn. State HS League Rep. Assembly); additionally, her dedication to kids was obvious. I remember her being excited when West initiated their 'Hall of Fame' to recognize individuals who brought positive attention to West extracurricular programs. Barb validated/ respected everyone she encountered. During our many conversations, she'd recall random instances where she had encountered a West graduate. Once a young man behind a golf counter stopped her to say, "Hi, Miss K! Remember me? I am so glad you taught me social dance. I really needed it!" Over her years at West, she positively impacted the lives of a multitude of students and co-workers. Barb always went the extra mile! I know she is smiling down on us with pride at this induction. I am honored to call her a good friend."
